Brazilian Marcello Shultz is the hero of this morning; a guy with illustrator and typography skills. In his latest works he blends these two features and creates very elaborate compositions. Starting from the basics of the calligraphy and soft lines, strictly drawn in pencil, then illustrating them to computers, where enriched by the typical elements of vector illustration and 3d. The result of the letterings are very complex with lights, shadows and textures, where the illustration becomes the main element of communication. We appreciate the work of this designer, although not in line with our typography taste. We suggest you to visit his website for a broader overview of his work. Enjoy! www.marceloschultz.com

Turin is a friendly city full of imagination and its lettering almost always reflects these characteristics. The signs are divided into two main categories: sloped and decorated. Inclined letters are often simple and of cursive nature, some show subtleties others a little less but certainly interesting is the way in which they develope some forms. Decorated letters are almost always slab serif and liberty types, some with very specific forms. To our chagrin we noticed that most of them have not been restored, and were ruined in time, we are not sure but we think that many shops in the center of the city can not change their sign and so they leave it to deteriorate, what a pity! We were very impressed to see that there is a massive use of blue and red neon and also here we could notice enough studied compositions in the form of letters (neon permitting). In some display cases you can find small treasures. In conclusion Turin is a city full of hidden wonders with an excellent typographic taste and we think this style is rightly developed thanks to the presence of figures like Novarese and Butti. We want to thank Sivlia, administrator of the Lettering da Torino page, for giving us the possibility of using also some of her photographic material! In that second gallery the picture that Silvia, administrator of the Lettering da Torino page, kindly give to us

The typography of toledo grows in consistent and fruitfull way from its roots (see Historical Toledo) in a consistent and fruitful way. This applies to both techniques and styles used. The art of ceramics, never abandoned, found in lettering one of its best expressions. In street names, calle, we find some of the most creative compositions. Here the lack of useful space for the information, has been used as a pojects resource. Letters are compressed, combined and unite, as they used do in meddle age, creating new glyphs impressive recognizability and ease of reading. In the design of this types we find the tendency to swell the terminations with big circular serif, mostly in the R, with big circular serif. Unfortunately, no one dedicate the same attention to the number, most of them are reproduced by stencil in fast way. We didn’t find particular trend in painted signs , just a large use of shadows and 3d, but a general simplicity and consistency in the design of the letters, sometimes with something wrong. We were particularly pleased to find examples of engraved stone, now, almost always, are relegated to commemorative plaques and cemeteries.

The Cinema Museum of Turin is a playful and cultural unique place, where you can find not only reconstructed scenes citing some of the main genres, there is also a section with some of the most fascinating objects that have made the history of cinema and the moving image. Luckily for us there are kept a part of posters related to different periods (author’s note: unfortunately lighten very roughly, some left completely in the dark, others with spotlights reflecting against glasses, that’s why it was not possible to make always a good shot) The posters are divided into two parts, the first part that impressed us very much, is linked to the old posters of 800-900, there is a massive use of typography, where were presented almost all in performances of illusionists. Indeed, the movie posters in the second part, have a different approach. With the addition of photocomposition there is often the need to make live in the same elaborate photography, illustration, title and text, almost always preferred to highlight the title letters, some with excessive decorations, others with most elegant choices. Only a few of them, in the creative phase, present compositions in which all these elements are not separated into layers but are part of the same composition.. There is almost always a calligraphic approach or otherwise the ex-novo drawing of the character. We think it’s a pleasant trip even if there is only a small part dedicated to the movie posters.
